This sale features a curated selection of 349 hand-picked lots, ranging from the Renaissance all the way through to the early 20th century, and covering many different media, from monumental oils to tiny miniatures. In addition to a large selection of fine Old Master oils and works on paper, including a contemplative engraving by Albrecht Dürer and a striking portrait attributed to Sir Godfrey Kneller, we are pleased to present works by important 19th-century artists like Edwin Longsden Long RA, Johannes Frederik Hulk, John Frederick Herring (Senior and Junior), Stanhope Forbes and Philip Alexius de László. The auction also includes a large offering of portrait miniatures from various British collections, with rare examples by John Hoskins and the female miniaturist Penelope Carwardine. We are also delighted to present two rare and important maritime watercolours, one depicting a naval action from the American Civil War.
