Dutch 1610-1690-
The Flute Player;

Provenance:
Sir Alfred Chester Beatty (1875-1968).
by whom given to the vendor's father.
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
The present composition appears to have been treated on a number of occasions by 17th-century Dutch artists working in the circle of Teniers, with a version of the same scene attributed to the 'School of David Teniers the Younger' sold by Kunstgalerij De Vuyst, Lokeren, on 18 October 1986, with minor variations such as the presence of a barrel behind the figure of the flute-player. This work is clearly heavily influenced by Teniers's lively character studies which typically feature a sitter drinking, smoking, or making music, set against a simple backdrop, focusing the viewer's attention squarely on the figure in the foreground. Indeed, the subject of the flute player is one to which Teniers himself returned, including in a similar work which was offered at Sotheby's, London, on 4 July 2019, lot 115, with the present composition also recalling Teniers' depiction of a 'Boor playing a Theoroblute' which sold at Christie's, New York, on 29 June 1998, lot 45.
