Lot 472

Description

Henri-Joseph Harpignies,
French 1819-1916-

Temps d'orage;

pencil and watercolour on paper, signed and dated 'h j harpignies 1912' (lower left), 12.1 x 17.1 cm.

Provenance:
with Ernest Brown & Phillips, London.
Private Collection, UK.

Note:
Alongside his close friend Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot (1796–1875), Harpignies emerged as a leading figure within the Barbizon School. This work showcases his artistic skill, with fluid brushstrokes that effectively suggest the gusty atmosphere of an impending storm. The loose application of paint conveys a lively, immediate impression of the landscape, reflecting the Barbizon artists’ preference for painting 'en plein air', directly from nature.

Buyer's Premium

The buyer shall pay the hammer price together with a premium thereon of 26% up to £20,000 (31.2% inclusive of VAT), 25% from £20,001 - £500,000 (30% inclusive of VAT), 20% from £500,001 thereafter (24% inclusive of VAT). The premium price is subject to VAT at the standard rate.

VAT
VAT is not charged on the hammer price unless it is stated that there is 'VAT applicable on the hammer price at the end of the description. Buyer's premium is subject to VAT.
