Provenance:
Private Collection, Los Angeles.
Estate of Michel Michelet (1894-1995).
Private Collection, UK.

Note:
The two statues ‘Mercure monté sur Pégase’ and ‘La Renommée à cheval sur Pégase’ (‘Mercury riding Pegasus’ and ‘The [King's] fame riding Pegasus’) by Antoine Coysevox (1640–1720) date to 1702, and originally resided in the Tuileries Garden in Paris, before being replaced with copies and moved to the Louvre [MR1822  and MR1824].

Benois was a seminal figure in the history of Russian art, founding the art movement 'Mir iskusstva' with contemporaries Sergei Diaghilev (1872-1929) and Léon Bakst (1866-1924), which served to promote Art Nouveau in Russia. Although best-known for his work as a stage designer, creating costumes and set designs for the Ballet Russes, under Diaghilev, Benois also produced a number of small-scale paintings depicting the landmarks of Paris, where he settled in 1927, which very much reveal his affection for the city. The present works date to c.1930.
