Lot 449

Description

Paul Fordyce Maitland,
British 1863-1909-

Kensington Gardens;

oil on panel, signed 'P Maitland' (lower left), bears indistinctly inscribed label 'Kensington Gardens - near[?] / the Pond / By Paul Maitland' verso, 13.5 x 21 cm.

Provenance:
Private Collection, UK (by descent).

Note:
Maitland was an early British Impressionist, who studied at the Royal College of Art under Theodore Roussel (1847-1926), and it is through Roussel that he became acquainted with artists James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903), Walter Sickert (1860-1942) and Philip Wilson Steer (1860-1942).

The present work, conceived on a warm summer's day, is characteristic of his charming scenes of London, with Maitland often returning to the subject of Kensington Gardens. A similar painting by the artist sold at Christie's, London, on 12 March 2014, lot 115 (£9,375).
