Lot 448
Description
James Kay, RSA RSW,
Scottish 1858-1942-
Sweet Summertime;
oil on canvas, signed 'James Kay RSW' (lower right), bears old label inscribed '...6. Sweet Summertime / James Kay RSW / Studio 5 West Regent Street / Glasgow / Scotland' attached to the upper stretcher bar, 25.5 x 36 cm.
Provenance:
Anon. sale, Christie's, Edinburgh, 2 May 1991, lot 471 (£6,023).
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
Kay was active in Glasgow throughout the late 19th century, and is thus often associated with the Glasgow Boys, who were working at the same time. Like artists James Paterson (1854-1932) and William York MacGregor (1855-1923), Kay's scenes are heavily influenced by the Impressionist movement. The present work is a particularly charming example of his painted oeuvre.
