Lot 450

Description

Circle of Thomas Eakins,
American 1844-1916-

Portrait of a lady, half-length, wearing a hat and a pince-nez, holding gloves and a walking stick, and leaning on a table with books;

oil on canvas, 71.2 x 56.2 cm.

Note:
The present work recalls Eakins' evocative portraits, often characterised by a sharp contrast between the well-lit faces of the sitters, set against a dark, plain background, such as in his portrait of Mrs Anna Kershaw, which sold at Sotheby's, New York, on 5 December 2015, lot 50, and in another portrait of Mrs Mary Arthur in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum in New York [65.83]. The corsage worn by the lady likely represents the suffragette colours of purple, green and white.

An attribution to the British painter Charles Spencelayh (1865-1958) has also been suggested.
