Description
Circle of William Merritt Chase,
American 1849-1916-
'Our Clair': Portrait of a maid carrying a tea-tray;
oil on canvas, inscribed and dated 'Our Clair / 21 Nov 1892' (lower left), bears stamp for Newman, Soho Square, London verso, 61 x 45.6 cm.
Note:
The present work is highly reminiscent of Merritt Chase's energetically-painted figure studies, such as a portrait of the artist's daughter which sold at Christie's, New York, on 13 November 2021, lot 711, and his enigmatic work depicting a lady at a mirror which sold at Sotheby's, New York, on 22 May 2008, lot 48. The artist's sensitive and characterful depiction of the figure's face also recalls Merritt Chase's painting of a 'Girl with guitar' which sold at Christie's, New York, on 19 May 2005, lot 73.
