A girl with a doll, in Volendam;

Provenance:

Private Collection, UK.

Literature:
Nico Jungman and Beatrix Jungman, 'Holland', London, 1904, pl.51, facing p.122.

Note:
Volendam is a town in northern Holland, known for its quaint streets, old fishing boats and the traditional clothing worn by some residents. The women's costume of Volendam, with its high, pointed bonnet, is one of the most recognisable of the Dutch traditional clothing. Nico and Beatrix Jungman visited the town twice in 1900 during their Dutch travels in preparation for their book 'Holland', in which Beatrix describes the children of Volendam: 'The little children are very shy, very silent: they make excellent models, never changing their position, never getting tired or bored, and always interested in watching the strange being who pays cents and dubbeltjes for most simple and apparently aimless standing or sitting for an indefinite time.' One may perhaps sense something of this stoic, shy watchfulness in the girl's charming expression. Beatrix also refers to the coral necklaces worn by the Volendam women, a child's version of which is worn by the girl here. The present work is a particularly charming and endearing example of Jungmann's distinctive colourful and flattened compositions.
