Description
Eilif Peterssen,
Norwegian 1852-1928-
Sketch for 'Gujamar's Song';
oil on canvas, signed, inscribed, and dated 'Eilif Peterssen / Skisse til / Gujamars sang / 1904-07' verso, 41 x 27.2 cm.
Provenance:
The Collection of Nick Drummond.
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
We are grateful to Jan Kokkin for his assistance in preparing this catalogue entry.
The present work is a preparatory study for a section of a large wall decoration of 'Gujamar's Song' which Peterssen completed for the Oslo villa of the publisher William Nygaard (1865-1952) in 1905-07, the floorplan for which is in the National Museum in Oslo [NG.K&H.B.06037-024]. The present sketch is for the right-hand section of the seventh of a series of fifteen wall paintings telling the story of the French knight Gujamar, in which he, recovering from a hunting accident, is cared for by a beautiful princess with whom he falls in love, having arrived at her castle after a long journey. This subject of a French knightly song of the Middle Ages exhibits Peterssen's interest in medieval and folk song motifs which he returned to throughout his career, as in the Norwegian folk song 'Rikeball og stolt Gudbjør' which inspired his decoration of Jørgen B. Stang's (1874-1950) Oslo villa.
