Lot 414
Description
Virgilio Tojetti,
Italian 1849/51-1901-
Frieze of dancing figures in classical dress;
oil on canvas, signed 'Tojetti' (lower right), 30.8 x 139.8 cm.
Provenance:
Anon. sale, Sotheby's, London, 20 November 1996, lot 193 (£6,000).
Private Collection, UK.
Tojetti worked largely as a decorative painter, collaborating with the cabinet-maker George A. Schastey (1839-1894) during the 1870s and 1880s to produce elaborate interiors for wealthy clients, including ceilings and friezes for a New York townhouse bought by John D. and Laura Spelman Rockefeller in 1884, which are now in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum in New York [2009.226.19a–f]. The present frieze fits neatly into the artist's oeuvre, emphasising his preoccupation with Classical subjects which is evident in many of Tojetti's paintings, such as, for example, his depiction of 'The muse of music with dancing putti' which sold at Bonhams, New York, on 21 October 2008, lot 108.
