Lot 400
Description
Edward Lear,
British 1812-1888-
View of a landscape with trees in the foreground;
black chalk on paper, signed and dated 'Edward Lear del. / 1838' (lower right), 25.1 x 40.4 cm. (mounted / unframed).
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK (by descent).
Note:
Edward Lear was a prolific draughtsman who was preoccupied with the creatures and landscapes which he encountered on his extensive travels across Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East over the course of his career. The present work exhibits the distinctive technique which characterises his drawings, particularly in his depiction of the foliage of the tree-lined hilltop, which is evident, for example, in a similar drawing by Lear which sold at Bonhams, London, on 8 March 2023, lot 105 (£2,168).
