Lot 393
Description
Frederick Goodall, RA,
British 1822-1904-
Waiting for the boats;
pencil and watercolour on paper, signed with monogram and dated 'FG 1893' (lower left), bears old label inscribed '"Waiting for the boats." / "No7 Fr Goodall"' attached to the backing board, 22 x 60.3 cm.
Provenance:
Anon. sale, Bonhams, London, 21 June 1989, lot 94.
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
The present watercolour appears to relate to a painting by Goodall of the same composition, now in the collection of The Wilson in Cheltenham [1928.25]. Indeed, this scene is a characteristic work by Goodall, a hugely successful and celebrated Orientalist painter in his lifetime and subsequently. Goodall made two trips to Egypt, once in 1858 and one in 1870, travelling and camping with members of Bedouin tribes on both occasions, an experience which likely informed the present scene. The wide, panoramic format of the present work is typical of Goodall's paintings, as is his generous use of warm pinky hues.
