Lot 390
Description
Alexander James Mavrogordato,
British 1869-1947-
Market Day in a European town;
pencil and watercolour on paper, signed and dated 'Alex. J. Mavrogordato. 1908' (lower left), bears various later inscriptions to the reverse of the backing board, 37.8 x 52.7 cm.
Provenance:
The collection of Sir Edward Marsh (1872-1953), according to the later inscription to the backing board.
Note:
Mavrogordato's extensive travels across Europe and North Africa informed the great number of watercolours and oil paintings he produced. He exhibited widely over the course of his career, including in a one-man show of Russian views in 1896, and another of Greek, Italian, and English landscapes in 1910. The bright sunlight and colourful costumes of the present scene suggests a town in a Southern European - possibly Italian - location.
