Lot 369

Description

Augustus Edwin Mulready,
British 1844-c.1905-

Boys selling newspapers on a street corner, or 'Companions in Adversity';

watercolour and bodycolour heightened with white on paper, signed and dated 'A.E. Mulready. / 1889.' (lower left), 34.8 x 25.3 cm.

Provenance:
Anon. sale, Sotheby's, 26 September 1990, lot 319 (£5,099 hammer).

Private Collection, UK.

Note:
Mulready was a member of the Cranbrook Colony, a group headed by Thomas Webster (1800-1886) which met each summer at Cranbrook in Kent to paint scenes of everyday life. Mulready concentrated entirely on scenes of life among the poor, taking as is subjects urchins and ragamuffins in the East End of London. Many of these works, although often charming and tending to be sentimental, are a true commentary on the poverty still remaining in later Victorian Society. Mulready exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1863 and 1880.
