Lot 358
Description
José Gonzálvez y Martínez,
Spanish 1837-1897-
Portrait of a gentleman, traditionally identified as Don Martin del Villar y García, seated three-quarter length, leaning on the arm of a tasseled chair;
oil on canvas, signed and dated 'Jose Gonzalvez / 1880' (lower right), bears label indistinctly inscribed 'Don Martin del / Villar y García del / Fosal[?]' verso, 110.7 x 82.2 cm.
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
It is possible that the present portrait depicts Martín Villar García (1835-?) a Spanish politician and academic who served twice both as the Rector for the University of Zaragoza in Spain, between 1884-1885 and 1890-1892, and also as the Senator for the Province of Zaragoza, from 1890-1892 and 1896-1898.
The present work is characteristic of Gonzalvez's closely-observed, highly-detailed portraits which convey a strong sense of the sitter's presence.
