Lot 354

Description

Circle of John Partridge,
British 1789/90-1872-

Portrait of a gentleman, seated half-length, wearing clerical clothing and holding a book;

oil on canvas, 91.2 x 70.5 cm.

Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.

Note:
The present work very much resembles Partridge's dignified portraits, such as that of Lord Colborne which sold at Christie's, London, on 13 July 1989, lot 198, which, as with the inclusion of the book which the sitter holds in the present work, gestures towards Colborne's great sophistication and learning through his inspection of a painting. This portrait also recalls Partridge's depiction of an unknown cleric in the collection of the University of Aberdeen [ABDUA 30125].

Buyer's Premium

The buyer shall pay the hammer price together with a premium thereon of 26% up to £20,000 (31.2% inclusive of VAT), 25% from £20,001 - £500,000 (30% inclusive of VAT), 20% from £500,001 thereafter (24% inclusive of VAT). The premium price is subject to VAT at the standard rate.

VAT
VAT is not charged on the hammer price unless it is stated that there is 'VAT applicable on the hammer price at the end of the description. Buyer's premium is subject to VAT.
