Lot 350
Description
Circle of William Hilton, RA,
British 1786-1839-
Portrait of a lady, quarter-length, wearing a white dress and blue shawl with embroidered edges;
oil on canvas, 35.9 x 30.6 cm. (unframed).
Note:
Hilton was a prominent portraitist who was best known for his portraits of the poets John Keats and John Clare, both now in the National Gallery in London. The present work heavily recalls Hilton's portrait of Harriet De Wint, née Hilton, in the collection of the Usher Gallery in Lincoln [LCNUG 1999.3], whilst the technique resembles that of his portrait of an unknown man, also in the Usher Gallery [LCNUG 1927.2576], particularly in the distinctive handling of the paint to depict the sitter's hair and features.
