A figure and his horse resting beside a canal, a woman and child passing by;
oil on canvas, signed 'ER Smythe' (lower right), 30.7 x 25.4 cm.; together with 'Waiting for the Boats', coloured chalk on paper by the same hand, signed 'ER Smythe' (lower left), 32.2 x 26.2 cm., two (2).
Provenance:
(the second) with Oscar and Peter Johnson Ltd, London.
The Elliston Family, Suffolk;
and thence by descent.
Exhibited:
(the second) London, Lowndes Lodge Gallery, 1964, no.21.
Note:
Edward Smythe was a key figure in the loose group of artists subsequently called the 'Suffolk School', with the present works particularly charming examples of the artist's idyllic rural scenes.

Qualifying living artists and the descendants of artists deceased within the last 70 years are entitled to receive a re-sale royalty each time their work is bought through an auction house or art market professional.
It applies to lots with hammer value over £1,000 as follows:
0 to £50,000 - 4%
£50,000.01 to £200,000 - 3%
£200,000.01 to £350,000 - 1%
£350,000.01 to £500,000 - 0.5%
Exceeding £500,000 - 0.25%
ARR is capped at £12,500

Export of goods
Buyers intending to export goods should ascertain whether an export licence is required before bidding.
