Lot 320

Description

Alfred Fontville de Breanski,
British 1877-1957-

The banks of the Avon;

oil on canvas, signed 'A.FONTVILLE' (lower left), further signed and titled 'The banks of The Avon. / A FONTVILLE' on the reverse, 61 x 91.5 cm. (unframed). ARR.

Provenance:
Private Collection, UK (by descent from 1970s).

Note:
Alfred Fontville de Breanski studied with and was heavily inspired by his father, the well-known landscape painter Alfred de Breanski Senior (1852-1928), and, like his father, he became well-known for his dramatic and expansive highland views. The present scene is, however, peaceful and contemplative, featuring a serene river landscape with sheep grazing along the banks, and swans gliding gracefully across the water. A similar depiction of the River Avon by de Breanski Junior was sold at Roseberys on 9 July 2024, lot 312.
