Description
German School,
19th century-
Schloss Sanssouci;
oil on canvas, 55.2 x 68.
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
Sanssouci is a Rococo-style summer palace in Potsdam, near Berlin, built between 1745 and 1747 for Prussian King Frederick the Great as a retreat from court life. It has just ten main rooms and was designed to reflect Frederick’s personal tastes. Set on a terraced hill and surrounded by temples and follies, Sanssouci emphasised relaxation, as reflected in its name - French for 'without worries'. In the 19th century, Frederick William IV of Prussia restored and expanded the palace with the help of architect Ludwig Persius.
Following World War Two, Sanssouci became a tourist site in East Germany. After reunification in 1990, Frederick the Great’s remains were reinterred there. That same year, the palace and its gardens were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Today, it is maintained by the Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation and attracts over two million visitors annually.
