Lot 292

Description

Richard Henry Nibbs,
English 1816-1893-

Evening at Bosham;

oil on canvas, signed 'RHNibbs' (lower left), 78.3 x 132 cm.

Provenance:
Private Collection, UK (by descent).

Note:
Nibbs was a self-taught artist who initially trained as a musician, and worked as a cellist in the orchestra at the Theatre Royal in his hometown of Brighton. His body of work focuses almost exclusively on maritime scenes, featuring boats either on the open sea or in quiet harbours along the south coast of Britain and in various European towns. His paintings often highlight the sea’s ever-changing and unpredictable nature, portraying vessels in both serene, calm waters and turbulent, stormy conditions. In the present work, the dark clouds, dramatic sky, and reflections on the water, create a strong sense of drama.

Bosham is a coastal village, ecclesiastical parish and civil parish in West Sussex. The Holy Trinity Church - seen here prominently against the skyline - has been in existence at least since Anglo-Saxon times, and is mentioned in the Domesday Book. Much of the building retains its original Saxon architecture, dating from about the late 800s. The tower houses an original Saxon window. There is also a 13th-century crypt, which is speculated to have been a charnel house used to harbour the bones of those from the collegiate church nearby.
