Note:
Emslie's watercolour depicts three houses in Red Lion Square, Holborn, with the accompanying notes detailing their historical significance. No. 23 was the home of 'Jonas Hanway [1712-1786], the first man to use an umbrella in London. It was from this house that he made the experiment.', whilst No. 24 was the site of 'the Ancient Baronial Court before the Sheriff of Middlesex'. Emslie was the brother of Alfred Edward Emslie (1848-1918), and the son of John Emslie (1813-1875), and was at one point a student of Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882). He was an early member of the Folklore Society, and took notes and made topographical drawings to record folklore across England.
The third work, by Matthews, is likely after a print of the same composition by Charles Tomkins (1757-1823), the original drawing for which is in the collection of the British Museum [G,10.102]. This forms one of the more than 3000 drawings which the antiquarian John Charles Crowle (1738-1811) compiled to create an extra-illustrated copy of Thomas Pennant's (1726-1798) 'Some Account of London'.
