Two Sketches: View of the Avenue leading down from Gleave; and The Under Walk in the Plantation, Barton Place;
each pencil, pen, and black ink on paper, the first inscribed 'View of the avenue leading down from the Gleave / Sepbr 1803' verso, the second inscribed 'The under walk in the plantation Spbr 1804 B. Place' verso, each 26 x 17.1 cm., two (2).
Provenance:
The artist, thence by descent, as part of a sketchbook of 19 views.
with Agnew's, London, by whom sold as a pair on 20 February 1961 (as 'Francis Towne').

Note:
Louisa Heath Drury was the daughter of Joseph Drury, headmaster of Harrow School between 1785 and 1805, and married John Herman Merivale on 10th July 1805.
The Merivale family, a wealthy nonconformist family from Exeter, was closely connected with Francis Towne. Various members of the family were travelling companions, friends, pupils and patrons of the artist, and Louisa's husband was the beneficiary of Towne's estate, inheriting the most of the elder artist's work.
This was part of an album of drawings by Louisa Drury bought by Agnew's in 1960 as by Francis Towne. The album was inscribed `L.H. Drury Sept 15 1803' and `Louisa Heath Merivale July 1805'.

Buyer's Premium
The buyer shall pay the hammer price together with a premium thereon of 26% up to £20,000 (31.2% inclusive of VAT), 25% from £20,001 - £500,000 (30% inclusive of VAT), 20% from £500,001 thereafter (24% inclusive of VAT). The premium price is subject to VAT at the standard rate.

Qualifying living artists and the descendants of artists deceased within the last 70 years are entitled to receive a re-sale royalty each time their work is bought through an auction house or art market professional.
It applies to lots with hammer value over £1,000 as follows:
0 to £50,000 - 4%
£50,000.01 to £200,000 - 3%
£200,000.01 to £350,000 - 1%
£350,000.01 to £500,000 - 0.5%
Exceeding £500,000 - 0.25%
ARR is capped at £12,500
