Lot 232

Description

Thomas Girtin,
British 1775-1802-

Pont Fawr (Llanrwst Bridge);

pencil and watercolour on paper, bears later inscribed label attached to the reverse of the frame, 7.5 x 12.1 cm.

Provenance:
The Hetherington Collection of English Drawings & Watercolours, Christie's, London, 14 February 1978, lot 59 (part lot).
T. Girtin Esq. sale, Sotheby's, London, 14 November 1991, lot 103 (£3,221).

Literature:
Andrew Wilton, 'The 'Monro School' Question: Some Answers', Turner Studies, vol.4, no.2, 1984, p.13, no.10 (illustrated).

Note:
This watercolour was dated by Wilton to c.1797/98, and was probably after an original by Edward Dayes (1763-1804), copied as an exercise in 'The Monro School'. This informal 'academy' consisted principally of Girton and J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851), alongside others including John Linnell (1792-1882), Peter de Wint (1784-1849), and John Varley (1778-1842). These artists produced a number of sketches, typically after drawings by artists such as Dayes and John Robert Cozens (1752-1797), for the physician and art collector Dr Thomas Monro (1759-1833).

Pont Fawr crosses the River Conwy in the town of Llanrwst, Conwy County Borough, Wales. Traditionally attributed to the architect Inigo Jones, it was built in around 1636.
