Lot 230
Description
Circle of Christoph Heinrich Kniep,
German 1755-1825-
A view of the Colosseum in Rome, with a mother and two children in the foreground;
pencil and watercolour on paper, indistinctly inscribed in German 'seinam[?] lieben Dr: ... Weinassow[?] / ...' (lower left), 33.2 x 45.4 cm.
Provenance:
Private Collection.
Note:
The present work recalls Kniep's watercolours, which offered romanticised views of historical architectural sites, such as, for example, his view of a temple at Paestum which sold at Bonhams, London, on 12 December 1996, lot 60. Kniep was best known for accompanying Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832), to whom he was introduced by his friend Johann Tischbein (1751-1829), on his travels through Italy.
