Lot 223

Description

Jean-Charles-Joseph Rémond,
French 1795-1875-

A View of Rome;

oil on canvas, 72.5 x 99.3 cm.

Provenance:
with the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis [no.88.2] (as 'Pierre-Henry Valenciennes').
Private Collection, Rome.
Anon. sale, Bonhams, London, 4 July 2012, lot 75 (as 'Jean-Charles-Joseph Rémond').

Exhibited:
[Possibly] Paris Salon, Jean-Charles-Joseph Rémond, 'Etude d'apres nature' (View from the Campo Vaccino in Rome), 1924.
Minneapolis Art Institute, 'Fiftieth Anniversary Exhibition', 4 November 1965-2 January 1966 [no.L65.293], as 'Pierre-Henry Valenciennes' (lent by The Walker Art Centre).

Note:
We are grateful to Genevieve Lacombre and Luigi Gallo for confirming the attribution to Rémond.

Rémond was a pupil of Jean-Victor Bertin (1767-1842) and Jean-Baptiste Regnault (1754-1829), and was particularly celebrated for his sweeping views of Italian landscapes, often dotted with ruins. After winning the Grand Prix de Paysage Historique in 1821, Rémond spent the next five years in Italy. Painted during this time, the present lot demonstrates Rémond's keen interest in classical architecture and composition, as well as his 'en plein air' method. For another Roman example of his oeuvre, see his 'View of the Colosseum and the Arch of Constantine from the Palatine', which sold at Bonhams, London, 23 June 2015, lot 7 (£53,750).

On the extreme right of this composition are the walls of the Colosseum. To the left is the Arch of Constantine with figures depicted beside the Basilica of Maxentius. In the distance are the Campanile of Santa Maria Aracoeli and the Dome of Santa di Loreto.

Buyer's Premium
