Lot 220

Description

Circle of Jean-Honoré Fragonard,
French 1732-1806-

Study of a young woman, looking down;

oil on panel, 51.5 x 63.2 cm.

Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.

Note:
The motif of a young woman looking down recurs in a number of red and black chalk drawings by Fragonard, Jean-Antoine Watteau (1684-1721) and their imitators. This energetically brushed work appears to be intentionally unfinished, for fear of losing the freshness of an idea, and was most likely made from a model in the studio. It can possibly be dated to c.1760 or perhaps even a little earlier. The young woman’s gaze focuses on the object that she is holding and the artist has deliberately left the hands, clothes and background in a sketchy state, demonstrating a great facility with the paintbrush. The composition may well have been worked up on a larger canvas later on.
