Read was a successful and sought-after portraitist, whose delicate pastels were informed by her training under Maurice Quentin de la Tour (1704-1788). She worked variously in Rome and London, and established a strong following for prominent patrons including Queen Charlotte (1744-1818), for whom she produced a number of works, including a portrait of the Queen with the Prince of Wales, which was exhibited in 1763, and another of the Prince of Wales with his brother, Prince Frederick, in 1765.
