Scottish 1723-1778-

Portrait of Catherine Pelham as a child, three quarter length, in a blue dress with lace trimmings and lace pink-ribboned cap, in a landscape;

pastel on paper, 68.5 x 53.5 cm.

Provenance:
The Dukes of Newcastle, Clumber, and by descent to The Earl of Lincoln.
The Earl of Lincoln, Clumber Park sale, Christie's, 4 June 1937, lot 7 (25 gns. to Lady Galway).
The collection of the descendants of the 8th Viscount Galway sale, Christie's, London, 20 March 1979, lot 117.
Private Collection, UK.

Literature:
Neil Jeffares, 'Dictionary of Pastellists before 1800', no. J.612.344.

Exhibited:
'Old Masters at Arley', 1984.

Note:
Catherine Pelham, daughter of the Rt. Hon. Henry Pelham, in 1744 married the Earl of Lincoln who became the 2nd Duke of Newcastle in 1768. She died before he acceded, so her latest title was Countess of Lincoln.

Read was a successful and sought-after portraitist, whose delicate pastels were informed by her training under Maurice Quentin de la Tour (1704-1788). She worked variously in Rome and London, and established a strong following for prominent patrons including Queen Charlotte (1744-1818), for whom she produced a number of works, including a portrait of the Queen with the Prince of Wales, which was exhibited in 1763, and another of the Prince of Wales with his brother, Prince Frederick, in 1765.
