Lot 183

Description

Henry Pickering,
British c.1720-c.1770-

Portrait of a lady, traditionally identified as Lady Wombwell, wife of the 1st Baronet Wombwell, half-length, wearing a blue dress with black trim and a pink silk shawl;

oil on canvas, bears inscription 'Miss Wombwell' verso, 77.5 x 64.7 cm.

Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.

Note:
The present portrait is believed to be of Susannah Rawlinson, wife of the first Lord Wombwell (1734-1780), who was also portrayed by Tilly Kettle in c.1765 in a full length portrait in the Government Art Collection [no.707]. Sir George Wombwell was Chairman of the Honourable East India Company and a Member of Parliament.

Pickering is believed to have been active in the area around Manchester, completing commissions for families on either side of the Pennines, a fact which supports the identification of the sitter, with the Wombwell family residing at Newburgh Abbey in North Yorkshire. Indeed there is a village of the same name near Barnsley. Pickering's portraits are notable for their accomplished drapery, as evident in the present portrait, with the clothing often completed by Joseph van Aken (c.1699-1749) and his brother Alexander (c.1701-1757). The sitter's fashionable Turkish-style bodice in the present work dates the work to the 1760s, when Susannah Rawlinson would have been around 20 years of age.

Hugh Belsey has kindly suggested the attribution to Pickering, and has provided many of the details in the catalogue note above.
