Lot 184

Description

Studio of Joseph Wright of Derby,
British 1734-1797-

Portrait of a boy shading a candle;

oil on canvas, bears label for Derby Bi-centenary Exhibition inscribed 'Lender's Name: Mrs Lister-Kaye / Address: Morley Manor, Derby / Title of Picture: Boy shading Candle' attached to the central stretcher bar, bears various further labels attached to the stretcher bars, 34.5 x 30 cm.

Provenance:
The Collection of Mrs Arthur Lister Kaye, Morley Manor, Derby.
The Collection of Mrs Sacheverell Bateman, Morley Manor, Derby.
Anon. sale, Phillips, London, 11 November 1980, lot 39 (as 'Studio of Joseph Wright of Derby').
The Collection of a Nobleman.
His sale, Christies, London, 29 January 1982, lot 26, as 'Wright'.

Exhibited:
Derby, Corporation Art Gallery, 'Bicentenary Exhibition of the Works of Wright of Derby', 1934 (lent by Mrs Lister-Kaye).

Note:
The most famous example of Wright of Derby's distinctive candlelit scenes, defined by his use of dramatic chiaroscuro, is undoubtedly his 'Experiment on a Bird in an Air Pump' in the collection of the National Gallery [NG725]. The figure of the boy in the present work particularly recalls Wright of Derby's depiction of 'Two Boys with a Bladder', which is known to us through various copies of the lost original.

Another painting, almost identical in composition and of similar dimensions to the present work, was offered at Christie's, London, 29 October 2009, lot 132 as 'Attributed to George Romney'.
