Lot 179

Description

Circle of Mary Beale,
British 1633-1699-

Portrait of a lady, seated half-length, wearing an elaborate white lace headdress and a white sash with a golden lace trim;

oil on canvas, feigned oval, 76.5 x 63.4 cm.

Provenance:
The Collection of George Withers.
Private Collection, UK.

Note:
This striking portrait was painted by a 17th-century artist who appears to have been much influenced by Beale's approach, resulting in a work which, like Beale's paintings, conveys a powerful sense of the sitter's presence and character. Indeed, this portrait bears a particularly strong resemblance to an oil by Beale which sold at Christie's South Kensington, on 2 December 2024, lot 727. The sitter's gold trimmed sash denotes status or rank, and her prominent lace headdress (known as a fontange), which dates the painting to the late 17th century, also appears in portraits by Beale, including that of Judith Sibthorp in the collection of the Usher Gallery in Lincoln [LCNUG 1972.144].
