Lot 178

Description

After Sir Anthony van Dyck,
Flemish 1599-1641-

Portrait of a lady, traditionally identified as Ann Carr, Countess of Bedford, head and shoulders, wearing an ochre-coloured dress and pearl jewellery;

oil on canvas, 58.8 x 49.5 cm.

Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.

Note:
The present work is a near contemporary partial copy of a portrait of Ann Carr, Countess of Bedford (1615-1684) by Van Dyck which is in the collection of Eastnor Castle, Herefordshire. Carr was the only child of Robert (c.1587-1645) and Frances Carr (1590-1632), Earl and Countess of Somerset, known for their involvement in the murder of Sir Thomas Overbury (1581-1613), for which both were imprisoned in the Tower of London. Anne Carr went on to marry William Russell, Duke of Bedford (1616-1700), with their son, William Russell (1639-1683) also convicted, and later executed, for treason, due to his involvement in the Rye House Plot to assassinate Charles II (1630-1685) and the Duke of York, later James II (1633-1701) in 1683.
