Lot 173
Description
Manner of Cornelius Johnson, also known as Cornelis Janssens van Ceulen,
19th century-
Portrait of a gentleman with a beard traditionally identified as Thomas Barnardiston, quarter-length, wearing a black coat with a white collar;
oil on canvas, bears partially indistinct inscription which reads 'from an original portrait [?] / Thomas Barnardiston aged 87 ...[?] / copied Augt[?] 28 1820 / ERB' to the upper stretcher bar, bears label attached to the lower right stretcher bar and frame which reads 'Copy by Miss Raymond Barker of a / portrait of Thomas Barnardiston painted / Jany 29th 1679/80 by Cornelis Jansens. / (This picture was in possession of / Mrs Raymond Barker in Australia / and was given to me by her) / ...Barnardiston', 75.7 x 63.2 cm.
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
The present work depicts Sir Thomas Barnardiston (d.1669), 1st Baronet, who served as an MP for Bury St. Edmunds in Suffolk at various points from 1640 to 1659, during the political and social upheaval of the Civil War and Interregnum.
It is likely painted after an original composition by the Anglo-Dutch painter Cornelius Johnson (1593-1661) and is certainly heavily reminiscent of his approach.
