Note:
Ludovic Gordon (1624-c.1685) served as the MP for Elgin and Forresshire, and was the son of Sir Robert Gordon, 1st Baronet (1580-1656), himself a prominent Scottish politician and courtier who was also known as a historian of the noble house of Sutherland, of which he was also a member. Ludovic's son, Robert Gordon, 3rd Baronet (1647-1704) was a scientist who was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society, and was characterised in popular tradition as 'The Wizard of Gordonstoun' who, according to legend, sold his soul to the Devil in return for knowledge. The Gordons owned vast lands including the site where Gordonstoun School now stands, which was attended by King Charles III.
The present work was commissioned by Ludovick's daughter Lucie Gordon in 1675 when Ludovick was 51 years of age. It has been authenticated by Carla van de Puttelaar.
