Lot 151
Description
Sebastiano Conca,
Italian 1680-1764-
Study of a monk kneeling in prayer, possibly St Francis of Assisi;
black chalk on blue paper, bears inscription 'Sebastian Conca' on the margin (lower centre), bears inscription 'Sebastiano CONCA / coll: Skippe' to the reverse of the backing board, 42.3 x 27.9 cm.
Provenance:
Property of the Late Professor Eric Gerald Stanley, FBA (1923-2018) (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_Stanley).
Note:
Conca was a prominent and influential Baroque painter, studying under Francesco Solimena (1657-1747) in Naples before moving to Rome, where he worked with Carlo Maratta (1625-1713). He was highly successful in his lifetime, and enjoyed the patronage of Cardinal Ottoboni (1667-1740), Pope Clement XI (1649-1721), and Charles III (1716-1788). His dramatic scenes are generally characterised by their dense compositions, featuring figures in rich and dramatic drapery, the representation of which Conca appears to be exploring in the present work. This drawing was executed in Rome in c.1730.
We are grateful to Professor Nicola Spinosa for confirming the attribution of the present lot.
