Lot 93

Description

Follower of Jean-Pierre Norblin de la Gourdaine,
French 1745-1830-

Fête galante, with elegantly-dressed figures in an ornamental garden;

oil on canvas, bears later inscription 'NORBLIN DE LA / GOURDAINE ?' to the central stretcher bar, bears old printed label 'FRAGONARD. Esquisse' to the right stretcher bar, 22.5 x 22.6 cm.

Provenance:
The collection of Ana Maria Espirito Santo Bustorff Silva, Christie's, London, on 29 April 2015, lot 112 (£2,000).
Private Collection, UK.

Note:
The present scene appears to have been heavily informed by the Rococo compositions of Norblin de la Gourdaine, themselves influenced by the paintings of artists such as Jean-Antoine Watteau (1684-1721). Similar works by Norblin de la Gourdaine include paintings which sold at Millon, Paris, on 27 September 2024, lot 79, and at Sotheby's, London, on 9 July 1998, lot 374.
