Lot 72

Description

Gustav Philipp Kratzmann,
Czech 1812-1902-

Pair of still lifes: Still life with peonies, grapes, and canteloupes; and Still life with figs, melons, peaches, plums, and flowers;

oils on canvas, the first signed and dated 'G Kratzmann pinxit / 1873.' (lower right), the second signed and dated 'Kratzmann . pinx . 1873' (lower right), each 94.5 x 128.3 cm., pair (2).

Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.

Note:
The present compositions are clearly influenced by the abundant still life paintings of 17th-century Dutch painters such as Pieter Claesz. (1597-1661) and Jan Davidsz. de Heem (1606-1684). In this way, the present work fits into Kratzmann's widely varying oeuvre, which was, nevertheless, unified by his interest in historical scenes, such as, for example, his dramatic depiction of King Louis XIV which sold at Stockholms Auktionsverk on 7 April 2022, lot 194.
