Lot 63
Description
Attributed to William Gouw Ferguson,
Scottish 1632/33-after 1695-
Still life with a partridge and kingfisher on a draped marble ledge with a game-bag and powder horn, and a finch suspended from a rope;
oil on canvas, bears inscribed label attached to the upper stretcher bar, 65.5 x 49.5 cm.
Provenance:
Lloyd Baxendale, by 9 June 1896.
Anon. sale, Christie's, London, 30 July 1981, lot 421, as 'W. G. Ferguson'.
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
Ferguson travelled widely in Europe, living in The Hague for a number of years, and also working in France and Italy over the course of his career. His works gesture towards the influence of contemporary Dutch artists Jan Weenix (1641/49-1719) and Cornelis van Lelienbergh (1626-1676), whose paintings he was likely exposed to on his travels. The present work is a particularly well-conceived example of the still life paintings which make up his oeuvre.
