Lot 58

Description

Gaspard Dughet, also known as Gaspard Poussin,
French / Italian 1615-1675-

A pair of Italianate landscapes, with two figures resting by a waterfall, and views of Tivoli beyond;

oils on canvas, each with former inventory numbers '215' and '218' (on the frames), each 37.8 x 48.2 cm., a pair (2).

Provenance:
Dudmaston Hall, Shropshire;
Thence by descent to the present owner.

Note:
We are grateful to Dr Sarah Cantor for confirming the attribution of this work on the basis of photographs.

Dughet studied under his brother-in-law, Nicolas Poussin (1594-1665). He was evidently heavily inspired by his teacher's dramatic Classical landscapes, often featuring tiny figures in the foreground who are dwarfed by the mountains and waterfalls behind them, truly emphasising the scale and majesty of the landscape beyond. The present scenes are characteristic works by Dughet, both in their theatrical composition and the delicacy of their handling, recalling, for example, a similar painting which sold at Dreweatts on 21 February 2024, lot 24 (£40,000 hammer price). The somewhat idealised capriccio view of the Italian town of Tivoli is also a typical subject for Dughet, with other depictions of the waterfalls at Tivoli in the Wallace Collection [P139], Hatton Gallery in Newcastle [NEWHG:OP.0026], and The Whitworth in Manchester [O.1960.1].

The present works look to date to the 1650s, around the middle of Dughet's career.

Dudmaston Hall is a 17th-century country house in the care of the National Trust in the Severn Valley, Shropshire.
