Description
Follower of Rombout Uylenburgh,
Dutch c.1580-c.1628-
A festive scene with villagers dancing around a musician;
oil on paper laid down on canvas, bears label indistinctly inscribed ‘acheté à la vente aprѐs decos / de Mr de Carriere / No. 197[?]. du catalogue. / École flammande. / Joueur de …[?] et danseur villageois’ attached to the upper stretcher bar, 36.9 x 27.5 cm. (unframed).
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
The present work resembles the distinctive, and unusual, en grisaille paintings produced by Rombout Uylenburgh, brother of the art dealer Hendrick van Uylenburgh (c.1587-1661) and a cousin of Rembrandt's (1606-1669) wife, Saskia van Uylenburgh (1612-1642). Indeed, this painting recalls the technique evident in Uylenburgh's Biblical scenes, including a series of five in the collection of the Museum Ons´ Lieve Heer op Solder in Amsterdam [AK-438a-e], and two works in the Rembrandthuis [2125 and 2126], as well as a similarly festive scene by Uylenburgh which sold at Dorotheum, Vienna, on 24 April 2018, lot 237.
