Lot 85

Description

Adriaen van Ostade,
Dutch 1610-1685-

The Organ Grinder;

etching on laid paper, possibly an impression of the fourth state of five, signed and dated 'AV Ostade / 1647' (within the plate, lower right), 10.9 x 9.1 cm.

Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.

Literature:
Bartsch, Hollstein, Godefroy 8.

Note:
The present print is typical of van Ostade's etchings, undoubtedly heavily influenced by those of his contemporary and rival Rembrandt (1606-1669). Indeed, this eccentrically-dressed organ-grinder could be interpreted as a character study, or 'tronie', which were popular amongst Netherlandish artists of the 17th century.

Buyer's Premium

The buyer shall pay the hammer price together with a premium thereon of 26% up to £20,000 (31.2% inclusive of VAT), 25% from £20,001 - £500,000 (30% inclusive of VAT), 20% from £500,001 thereafter (24% inclusive of VAT). The premium price is subject to VAT at the standard rate.

VAT
VAT is not charged on the hammer price unless it is stated that there is 'VAT applicable on the hammer price at the end of the description. Buyer's premium is subject to VAT.
