Lot 33

Description

Wenzel von Olmütz, after Albrecht Dürer,
German fl.1481-1497, and German 1471-1528-

The Dream of the Doctor;

engraving, signed 'W' (within the plate, lower centre), bears collector's stamp for Freidrich August II of Saxony [L.971] (lower right), bears collector's stamp for Dr Wilhelm August Ackermann [L.791] and inscribed 'E. Faesch. / 1841' verso, 19.7 x 12.2 cm. (unframed / mounted).

Provenance:
Freidrich August II of Saxony (1797-1854).
Eduard Faesch.
Dr Wilhelm August Ackermann (1793-1865).
The Collection of Sam Josefowitz (Lugt 6094).

Note:
The present composition, produced c.1500, is a copy in reverse after Dürer's original print, made just a few years earlier, around 1498. The moral of the work is the immorality of idleness, with the sleeping doctor falling prey to the temptations of the devil, in the form of a nude young woman, whilst another demon blows sinful thoughts into his ear.
