Lot 26
Description
After Sir Peter Paul Rubens,
Flemish 1577-1640-
Portrait of Dr Théodore Turquet de Mayerne, bust-length;
oil on canvas, 39 x 28 cm. (unframed).
Provenance:
Anon. sale, Tiberius Auctions, Vienna, 29 March 2021, lot 5 (as 'Attributed to Sir Anthony van Dyck', sold for €16,000 hammer).
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
This finely executed oil on canvas is an early copy of Rubens's drawing of Théodore Turquet de Mayerne (1573–1655) in the British Museum [1860,0616.36]. It is doubtful whether Rubens himself produced a painting based on this drawing, but there are various versions that originated in his workshop. The attributions of the surviving paintings are the subject of academic debate, with the closest example the one in the North Carolina Museum of Art, Raleigh, [52.9.106], which is catalogued as 'Attributed to Rubens', whilst another portrait sold at Sotheby's, London, on 6 July 2023, lot 199, as 'Workshop of Rubens', having previously been sold at fully autograph at Christie's, New York, 11 January 1989, lot 180. Another version, believed to be a late 17th-century copy, is in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery in London [1652].
Mayerne (1573-1655) lived in England between 1611 and 1655, where he served as a Royal Physician, with his positions including Chief Physician to James I's wife, Anne of Denmark. Mayerne came into contact with Rubens during the latter's visit to England in 1629 as Envoy to King Philip IV of Spain, in an attempt to improve relations between to two nations.
This painting was recently professionally restored, which had lead to the revealing of the tree foliage in the lower left quadrant.
