Lot 28

Description

Circle of Sir Peter Paul Rubens,
Flemish 1577-1640-

Head of a bearded old man in profile to the left - a fragment;

oil on canvas laid down on panel, 13.1 x 10 cm.

Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.

Note:
The present work may be the surviving portion of a much larger composition and is reminiscent of the river or sea gods that populate 17th-century Flemish paintings. The artist here clearly delights in the painterly execution of this dynamic figure. A favourable comparison may be made with Rubens’s graphic work such as the small scale, pen and ink study 'Head of a Bearded Man', c.1620-5, in Glasgow's Hunterian Art Gallery [GLAHA:54302]. The old man’s pose and delicately rendered profile and torso also recall to a certain extent the reclining figure of the river god Arno in Rubens's painting 'The Birth of Marie de Medici', executed between 1622-5, in the Musée du Louvre [INV 1770; MR 961]. To judge from its style this appears to be a painting from the 1620s.
