Lot 21
Description
After Jacopino del Conte,
Italian c.1510-1598-
Portrait of Michelangelo Buonarroti;
oil on canvas laid down on panel, inscribed 'MICHEL ... ANGELO' either side of the sitter's head, bears various later inscriptions verso, 29.8 x 25.4 cm.
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
The present work is an early copy after del Conte's original portrait, which no longer survives. Various other early versions of this same compositions exist, including one which has been attributed to Marcello Venusti (1512/15-1579) in the Casa Buonarroti [inv.188], and another in the Uffizi, Florence, which, like the present work, is inscribed with Michelangelo's name.
