Description
After Filippino Lippi,
Italian c.1457-1504-
St Paul visiting St Peter in prison;
oil on board, bears label inscribed 'St Peter preaching to St Paul / in Prison. by G Richmond / from[?] his Picture to / Alfred Edward Buchanan / August 1st 1898 / signed ... Laura M[?] Buchanan' verso, 45.8 x 23 cm.
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK (by descent in the family of George Richmond, RA).
Note:
This composition is after a fresco by Lippi in the Brancacci Chapel in the Santa Maria del Carmine, Florence which tells the 'Golden Legend'. The 'Golden Legend' tells the story of Theophilus, Prefect of Antioch, who put St Peter in prison, where he would have remained had not St Paul, who frequently visited him in his cell, informed Theophilus that Peter had the power to resurrect the dead. Theophilus was intrigued by this, and told Paul that he would have Peter released immediately if he were able to resurrect his son, who had died fourteen years previously. The present scene comes just before the 'Raising of the Son of Theophilus'.
The label on the present work suggests a connection with George Richmond, RA (1809-1896), who was the grandfather of Alfred Edward Buchanan through his daughter, Laura Maria Buchanan, Alfred's mother.
