Lot 59

Description

Circle of Paolo Anesi,
Italian 1697-1773-

Pair of landscapes: A wooded river landscape with travellers approaching a bridge and an angler seated on a bank; and A wooded river landscape with a drover and his herd at rest, a fisherman with his net on a bank;

oils on copper, each 14.5 x 21.3 cm., a pair (2).

Provenance:
with Thomas Agnew & Sons, London, as 'Jan Frans van Bloemen, called Orizzonte' [no.24956].
Anon. sale, Christie's, London, 29 October 2010, lot 157 (£3,750).
Private Collection, UK.

Exhibited:
London, Thomas Agnew & Sons (as J. F. Van Bloemen, called Orizzonte).

Note:
Anesi was active mainly in painting capriccios and landscapes, in the style of Giovanni Paolo Pannini (1691-1765).

The present works very much recall his idyllic Italianate landscapes, resembling, for example, a similar pair of his paintings which sold at Sotheby's, London, on 5 December 2024, lot 165, and another which were offered at Dorotheum, Vienna, on 12 May 2022, lot 308.
