Lot 284

Description

Cuzco School[?],
19th century-

Virgin and Child amongst flames and lightning bolts, surrounded by putti, with various scenes below, en grisailles;

oil on canvas, 179.1 x 119.9 cm. (unframed).

Note:
In this present work, the Virgin and Child appear surrounded by flames and lightning. The lightning may signify divine authority, while the flames suggest the presence of the Holy Spirit. The Christ Child holds a goldfinch, a traditional symbol of the Passion. It is thought that the bird’s red markings came from plucking a thorn from Christ’s crown, foreshadowing his future suffering.

Below the central figures are three scenes. It has been hypothesised that they may depict moments from the Marian apparitions of Our Lady of Laus, one of the earliest Church-recognised apparitions. Between 1664 and 1718, the Virgin is said to have appeared repeatedly to Benôite Rencurel, a young shepherdess in Laus, France. The scene on the lower left may show the small shrine where the Virgin first appeared, while the one on the lower right likely represents the larger church built after the apparitions were acknowledged. Across the bottom, pilgrims gather in veneration at the site of the shrine, which was known for miraculous healings through the oil of the sanctuary lamps.
