Lot 209

Description

Charles Hayter,
British 1761-1835-

The Tattersall family in their box at Covent Garden Opera House;

pastel on paper laid down on board, bears label inscribed 'Painted by / Charles Hayter / at Uxbridge' verso, and the same label variously inscribed with the names of the sitters (from left to right): 'Mr Tayler', 'Mrs DeNers', Mrs Justamond', 'Mrs James / Tattersall', 'Patty / Ms Matty', 'Miss Justamond / her sister.', 'Mrs / Jostin', and 'Mrs Matty', 38.8 x 52.5 cm.

Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.

Exhibited:
Nicholson Gallery, 1943.

Note:
Hayter was a prominent portrait miniaturist, and was also known as an authority on perspective, serving as 'Professor in Perspective and Drawing' to Princess Charlotte of Wales (1796-1817). Indeed, in the present group portrait, Hayter gestures towards his success as a miniature painter, depicting the figure furthest to the left ('Mrs Matty') holding a tiny portrait in her hand. Hayter's children, Sir George Hayter (1792-1871), John Hayter (1800-1895), and Anne Hayter (1795-1854) all went on to become successful artists in their own right.
